Good morning -- -- we continue with our live coverage. Store Isaak expected this still be a hurricane by the time it makes landfall. But it's only about a 140 miles off the mouth of the Mississippi and looking at the pants right now it looks like this storm is gonna come up. The Mississippi River. Almost just like Betsy did didn't -- come right up the Mississippi. Of course Betsy headwinds of a 156. Miles per hour. I remember some very scary moments says during that storm. And I also remember some scary moments on the Gulf Coast -- during Camille and then of course we all remember the. The disaster that followed stuck Katrina but that was more about the levees breaking that it was actually yeah wind speed I -- I remember we were saying at the at the monthly on hotel downtown. During Betsy and I as a kid one of the scary things that happened twice in the electricity have all grown out. And -- the wind was so strong on the did downsides. Of the hotel. It created a suction. And it literally. Broke the windows sucked the wind is out and suck the drapes the drinks were were flying out of of the room. Again there was a degree of excitement when you were a kid but with the electricity going announced Windiz being sucked out on the don't downside. Who wins the -- of the hotel. It one of the things that you've heard a lot of talk about is how on how eerie it is that severe storm is there is gonna be winters aren't. The seventh anniversary of Katrina -- this is no Katrina. And we're continuing to see how this story and I has had a chance to develop into a bigger storm. But hasn't done that yet I also love what we just heard in the news we've done Ames event did Jefferson Parish sheriff sheriff who know Norman. And also in -- PD chief Ronald surpassed are not gonna tolerate. Anything I can tolerate any misbehaving. No joy riding through the streets creating. Wait that's just one of the really. Escorted them. One of the very inconsiderate things. If people do. I guess simulate just I guess just don't think you -- flooded streets. And sometimes you cause more damage to homes and businesses. Because. You drive too fast down the street and I love. It -- Jefferson Perry shares sheriff's departments going to be out there and they're gonna pull you over. And I noticed that people in trucks and suvs have a tendency to do that. Over other people so you know and be considerate and this is a time -- and so often on the show that I do ignite eight to midnight on WWL. You know we talk about a social and political issues that we don't always -- agree when it comes to certain topics. But this is -- a reminder that you know we come together as a community. And this is not about politics this is not about disagreeing this is about coming together doing the best we can't just help each other through this. And I'm not turn it trying to promote this is as. The most serious story and that is ever come to this area but it's still something that we take seriously and you never know exactly. How a storm is gonna behave. When he gets over your area. And we are gonna get a lot of rain and we're getting a lot of wind -- the wind is already picking up right down. -- -- -- filled witness about 36 miles per hour grand -- 32 miles per hour and in New Orleans who got about a a ninety mile an hour wind. I don't know what the winds are gonna be like by the time they get to you but you're not that far away it's not like your up in Mississippi or in Arkansas birds are Tennessee's so the winds are gonna still. Be strong and I would think that there's going to be a possibility of a power outages are in that area. A lot depends on how fast this storm moves. Along and it seems like it's a rather they have the projections are there it's a rather slow moving storm. I would think that -- -- loose. The way I see the path now it looks as if you're going to be human receive the the most powerful part of the storm again it's still -- a minimal storm but you're gonna get the most powerful part of -- so. Late Tuesday early when state -- -- continuing this text say the the -- got broken off but then that the guys finish the text. And scoot between schools secure in my home working opportunity get by an elderly mother from the West Bank to my sister soma Slidell. Will I be able to. Get to Slidell on the I 10 in the morning I would think so I would think that leave the best thing that you could do. Isn't is leave early it's very it's gonna -- to get a little rough tomorrow morning. A -- mainly tomorrow afternoon and into tomorrow evening you should be able to do that right now let's go live to the WWL weather center meteorologist Eric -- rejoices with an update. On -- good morning it's good idea on good. As far as I think goes a 1 o'clock advisory shows that there hasn't been much of a change in terms of wind speed and overall direction still seen winds of seventy miles an hour. Put in at four miles an hour below what would be category one status we could see a bit of strengthening over the course of the day today I think that that is likely I think we'll see things. Just bump it up to category one strength there's a possibility it could Max out -- New -- about eighty and ninety miles an hour with those overall wins that would keep it at category one. The problem is they're only has -- -- and 47 miles left of water because it's only that much. Distance away from the mouth of the Mississippi River so it is moving in this direction and looks like it will make landfall late tonight early Wednesday morning. Dirty looks like this is gonna head right up the Mississippi. Yeah I think so but it you know a lot of times and I think people here that they think -- -- that's worst case scenario but. It's not worst case scenario when you're talking about a storm that's only this size -- a lot of times when they say it. A worst case scenario storm of the Mississippi that's what you're talking category three or higher and that's not rat right now. Somebody just called. Washington parachute the vocal on Syria they wanted to know what they can expect tonight I try to do the best I could have done a meteorologist with the south into a explain to them that I. As so they've rather than even tell you what I told them what can -- expect. For Washington parish were likely to see some of the heavier rains starting to impact them by the afternoon hours those rain bands are going to be some think. That will be our head of the center of the storm we all know that -- gonna start to see that by the late morning early afternoon I was just looking at a model that had some of those showers passing through saint Tammany and Washington. About 11 o'clock this morning -- were only a few hours away from start to see some of that rain. The heaviest of the rain will arrive by late tonight early Wednesday morning that's when the winds will be heaviest -- wealth or. Washington we're talking about winds sustained at the worst point Tuesday night Wednesday morning between about 1680 miles an hour. With the wind gust that I could be as -- about eighty to maybe ninety. Because sometimes when we get a big thunderstorm in the summertime and we can get really if we can get gusts fifty to sixty miles an hour earlier this not gone unheard out. But when you have 607080. Mile an hour winds that are sustained. That can cause a lot of stress on on property. Yeah again and -- with those summer thunderstorms we can get strong winds are just they last first sometimes like twenty minutes sometimes also that. With this one is going to be more prolonged event because of the way the tropical systems moving. And I think the wins. And we're already and if you stepped outside this morning is windy out there right now I mean even weigh up -- Washington pair were seen winds that are anywhere between about fifteen at forty miles an hour which. You know that's I wouldn't call that call. But I think by the afternoon we will see them probably between 25 and 45 of them by tonight as much as sixty to seventy. Yeah I -- -- in the station since about 7 o'clock last night so I haven't been outside yet but. I'm gonna get off before I take a walk and then. I've come back so I'll I'll I'll feel and wanna go on it feeling before it gets too dangerous to be out an infield yet they're getting tired scoot just walk outside that would eventually death. I did Derek is there is there any -- Any expectation that there could be any surprise with this storm. No -- the only surprise would be -- for me. If -- if it stays at a tropical storm status that would surprise me on and a big surprise so far because. Who I did expected to get stronger as it moved over the gulf I mean it's not really all that often where. A storm gets into the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico and doesn't get stronger that's. It has happened before it's just not. Comment right here so I'm not I'm not surprised it's gonna get any stronger I don't I don't think we're gonna see anything and outside and get to category two that's like -- Our next big advisory 4 o'clock in willow checked within just a little while -- get our meteorologist Eric -- alive and Demi WL Eyewitness News. A warning does of course include metro New Orleans and the Lake Pontchartrain area. Besides the potentially destructive winds and storm officials are worried about extreme rainfall. Intense rain could make it easy for trees and power lines to fall over in the wet ground. Already saturated because of the wet summer. So here WWL forecast does include a flash flood watch for southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi that will go into effect -- 7 o'clock this morning. And those have been dreading coming into New Orleans a military type vehicles have been coming in New Orleans and out transformers are coming in. It is really admirable. To see how well coordinated everything is and again this is not the this is not the most serious storm we're gonna have it in our in our lifetime. But it just really good to see how coordinated. Everybody has been with this -- here's a text and hello from Washington DC. I -- wrote out both Betsy and Camille as a kid in weight than Mississippi while our house was across the street from City Hall. Was that before or after the storm. Because I mean it was that was in saying a storm surge for Camille was eight feet. In our house. Lucky we had a warehouse on one side and a two story bar grille on the other. Dead just bought a brand new Shelby caprice. While which float down -- which floated down the street. I remember a fire that burned down -- -- downtown district on Coleman avenue Dan would not let -- kids leave the house. As we found out. Later he was. Oh while he was out with locals retrieving bodies. And very few people. Stranded. Or injured to this day I will always remember the wins. And the water is a text and enjoying the show and that is from -- hail and do you have early memories what what are some of your earliest memories. Of hurricane tore our tropical storm. And I remember in the mid nineties I forget the name of the tropical storm but this would have been 9596. There was a tropical storm coming and I remember going to a concert with the band live. The band live at the municipal auditorium. Again it was it was at the municipal. It was at the municipal auditorium. And I decided to go even though this tropical storm was coming -- of the place was was packed. I have a feeling that if you're usually out at this time. Maybe you're maybe you're still out from last night. May be he your job as you getting up this early to start work I'm assuming that if you're out now. You might see that things are a lot calmer. Then they would be ordinarily. Even though it's just a Tuesday morning. Can't even though today was a Monday afternoon when I walked through the -- the French Quarter I went to the quarter to do a couple of reports for a for -- annual -- And walking down -- street I saw him at two girls I would say they're in their twenties. And each one was it was -- too big bags filled with groceries from the arouses in the first quarter. And I did a report with them in and and I and they didn't wanna say where they were from the they had strong accent sounded like maybe they were from Germany and and they had -- they had a lot of snacks. And I said do you what do you have any anything to drink this and yes we are orange juice and something else and I said do you have anything to mix with the orange juice not in the bag but we have -- their room and they said we've heard about the parties. And so they were really they were really cute and and it you know if you're in a hotel your your your safe. If your hotel I'm assuming that there would be a generator I'm a little concerned about the apartment in building I live in not in terms of anything happening. But there's no generator there's a generators that maintains. Delights in the building. An air conditioning in the hallway. But not in the individual apartment -- of the electricity goes -- which is that it's not that likely to happen. In the CBD is certainly can't happen but it's not that likely to happen because you're not. Vulnerable to the trees that fall and and and -- snapped the lines and transformers ago ought to mean anything can happen and -- may end up losing electricity. But my windows don't open its. That kind of building it's a renovated building it is building night live it was built in I think nineteen -- five. So it's quite solid and the windows are designed to. Withstand winds up to 200 miles per hour. And I'm on a high floor so I'm not concerned at all. -- my furniture are not concerned at all about my belongings. I would be a little concerned if the meat that I happen to -- -- does go bad. I don't close it up to I'm closer to home from the station that if I do get a break I guess I can run home and if the electricity goes out and start throwing stuff so I don't have that much stuff in Arabic. Hi it's always sudden it's always inconvenient when you have to do without electricity. If you wanna join our show this morning our numbers 260187. He had early it's early memories of of hurricane. I guess my early I mean I know we went through tropical storms before them but I guess my earliest memories of hurricane. I would have been Hurricane Betsy. And I guess that would have been about nineteen now I'm 1965. In fact I think we were scheduled to start school. And as school was postponed because of Hurricane Betsy and as I said we live kinda close to the lake in Metairie. Where I grew up fans. My dad said you know just in case we're gonna go to -- -- there's there's been this there's been this historical fear. Made if a storm comes up the release. But there's -- I'll give -- chance to maybe get somewhere where you can write something down if you do if you -- prices that are. Outrageous. If you think somebody is taking advantage of view. Because of it this storm then you need to report that those are not good people. And they should be reported and they should be punished. And -- at that embryo again in just a moment. Here is a -- -- my wife works for energy corporation she is in Jackson Mississippi now. Because the corporate office has moved its emergency headquarters to Jackson. -- companies do that they will they will move outside of not an area this is this going to be hit by a storm. She is a part of the emergency response coordination team for energy and it's again it's nice to to know that that there's so much that his didn't. A proactive about to the preparations for this and I really think. Mayor Maureen how has done an -- -- or I think mayor Landrieu has done an excellent job. In preparing people making people think about all the possibilities. But at the same time. Hasn't been. And alarmist and nobody has in Jefferson Parish president John youngest and a great job doing on the western. -- and his parish and the list goes on the parish presidents all of this is a very very. Well orchestrated. Effort -- almost reminds me sometimes there of the that the saints offense when the saints offense is just really in -- This entire area is in sync. And while we can't depend on government and politicians to take care of us. Is it it is nice to know that we can feel secure in knowing that they have done their job. And this is what we elect them to do we elect them to do the things that government can do forest government can't do everything for us. The government can do some things forest. And we depend on them to to do their job win. They there in a position to do their job at a time like this. And I think I think we can all look back on dude did this state. And the city. And even the country. Before Katrina. We've all changed and learned a lot since Katrina and I think we can look at how chaotic. It all wise. During Katrina. Well that's not happening anymore. If you know -- Tony for our place you might wanna get it now. The weather is gonna start to deteriorate. Again we will get the next big update on tropical storm -- Is it going to finally become a hurricane we don't know. And it is it is it looks like it will be a minimal hurricane and I tell you you know who won once thought here. All of us who have had sent prayers. There must be working. Because is -- had a chance to become a really bad -- Going over the Gulf of Mexico. But they were some drier air that got sucked into the store. And to me that is just such a blessing and such an answer to prayers. So our prayers have worked now we're not through this yet it's not even here yet. But with what we see coming.
